The U.S. is currently facing an epidemic in relation to pain pill consumption as Americans consume 80 percent of the world’s pain pills right now. Recent studies show that Americans consume more of these drugs than any other group in the world, which is more than 110 tons of pure opiates every year.
According to an analysis done by the Associated Press, pharmacies, hospitals and physicians dispensed the equivalent of 69 tons of pure oxycodone and 42 tons of pure hydrocodone in 2010. That’s enough to give 40 5-mg Percocets and 24 5-mg Vicodins to every man, woman and child in the United States.
The rise in popularity of prescription pain pills has coincided with overdose deaths and robberies of pharmacies.
Reasons For The Prescription Painkillers Epidemic
For the percentage of Americans consuming pain pills to be so high, there must be some very strong influences that are creating this statistic.
One of the largest contributing factors is the ease in which someone can obtain pain pills. The drugs themselves are not illegal when there is a prescription for them, and the degree to which people and doctors abuse the issuance of prescriptions is the degree to which the drugs themselves can be abuse.
There are “pill mills”, where an establishment is set up with doctors that will issue prescriptions loosely to people with the intention of servicing addicts and not with any purpose to treat legitimate pain.
A teenager can get pain pills from their parent’s medicine cabinet. Recent studies show that the majority of first time users in the youth age bracket will get the pain pills from another family member, stealing it or asking for it. From there the dependency develops and other more consistent means are established to get the pain pills.
Pain clinics have been established throughout the U.S. that treat pain with individuals, using some very powerful painkillers in order to mask the pain. What this is creating in a lot of cases is a dependency to the drug in order to not feel any pain, which just as with any drug has numerous side effects that further destroy one’s life.
Being that the U.S. is one of the few countries that advertises pharmaceutical drugs on major media such as prime time TV, radio stations, newspapers and all sorts of outlets. It does not come as a great surprise that our consumption of pain medications is the highest in the world. Six years ago, the term ‘pain clinic’ was never heard, yet today on several drug rehab services hotlines and referral services, it is heard almost daily.
Apparently pain clinics seem to be the order of the day and yet they use some of the most powerful pharmaceutical drugs known to man to kill pain. If that is the solution that the person uses to handle his pain, then that is the solution he will continually have to use to avoid pain.
As with all drugs, the person builds up a tolerance and with that tolerance, comes the need to use more and more of the drug to achieve the desired result. If this is the solution that we as Americans choose, then these are the consequences that we will have to live with.
Solutions To Pain Pill Consumption By Americans
As referenced, the solution to pain is not drugs. This just burdens the user with another problem that can be worse than the pain he was originally experiencing.
The solution for anyone who now has an addiction to pain pills is effective drug rehab services.
Statistically, the best drug rehab services are long-term residential program that lasts 4-6 months. Often it could be longer depending on the individual needs of the person.
