Choosing to go to rehab is a major decision, and it can be a scary one. Any drug user that is considering rehab will probably have many doubts and questions about the experience. While talking to the staff of a drug rehab to find out what the process entails, you will be able to answer many of your questions, but some worries may remain. One common worry for many people entering rehab is whether or not rehab is safe.
This worry is understandable. After all, everyone in the facility will be there because of drug abuse or alcoholism. These conditions often go hand-in-hand with criminality and violence. It is in your best interest, therefore, to find out what sort of safety precautions a rehab center takes before you sign up. There are also precautions you can take yourself before entering rehab. Here are some of the areas you should look at.
One of the best precautions you can take before entering rehab is to not take too much cash or valuables with you. For one, you won’t need a lot of money or expensive jewelry or electronics while you’re busy getting off of drugs. These can serve as distractions during a time that you need to be focusing on getting yourself sober. In addition, it is true that some of the people you will be interacting with may have stolen money in the past in order to pay for drugs. By not taking these items with you, you protect yourself from the possibility of being stolen from.
It is also important to talk to the rehab center about what precautions they take. Does the center have security? Any good rehab the silly with how staff on hand with the purpose of keeping all client safe. This doesn’t mean, of course, that you’re looking for some sort of armed guards. It is a good idea, though, to have staff that regularly walk around the grounds of the facility to keep an eye out for everyone’s safety. Just knowing that the staff are around to help prevent any trouble is extremely comforting.
The purpose of the rehab center is to get everyone off of drugs, so it’s important for a facility to ensure that clients are not secretly using drugs while in the middle of a program. The urge to relapse in the middle of the withdrawal process can be strong, but giving into it could lead to a client having violent mood swings or other dangerous side effects. In order to prevent this, good rehab facilities use drug screening to make sure that clients are not using drugs while at the facility. A lax facility (the kind you don’t want to deal with) won’t keep a close eye on drug use, and clients feel they can break the rules with impunity. Watch out for facilities like this and give them a wide berth.
A Safe environment
Another way to determine if the facility is the right one for you is to find out if it is located in a safe environment. Some centers are located in the middle of urban areas that already have high amounts of drug use. It is very easy for drug pushers to get their products to the desperate users inside. If you’re trying to get off of drugs, this is not the type of location you want. Instead, look for a center located, ideally, far from urban areas. If you can find one in a relaxed environment, that is a bonus, too. You’ll know when you’ve found the right location.
