A recent study composed by Caron Treatment Centers and ReGENERATION Partners revealed that problems with substance abuse continue to thrive among U.S. family businesses. In fact, out of the 99 family businesses that participated in this study, more than 50 percent of them were dealing with some kind of drug or alcohol abuse problem.
Of the 50 percent dealing with substance abuse, 83 percent were attempting to recover from their addiction. The chairman and chief executive of ReGENERATION, James Olan Hutsheson, affirmed that this is a problem that is being overlooked, yet greatly affects our society and economy.
Why is substance abuse among family business happening at a higher rate? Is the issue ‘all in the family?’
Prescription Painkillers Becoming Top Choice
Some are surprised by the number of family businesses affected by substance abuse. Others feel that the trend is something that has been common. However one thing is for sure; that is the prescriptions are the drug of choice with this growing issue.
The popularity of abusing painkillers has caused a rise in the number of individuals diagnosed with drug or alcohol problems. In fact, it was an increase of 70 percent, which is a dramatic jump from 2001 to 2009. A study was done by gathering data from two national surveys of doctors’ visits and revealed that 18 million people visiting the doctor from 2007 to 2009 were in fact, suffering from drug or alcohol addiction.
This number is up from 10.6 million during the time from 2001 to 2003. It has been estimated that nearly 22.5 million Americans have some kind of addiction with either drugs or alcohol. Among the millions suffering with addiction, opioids proved to be the greatest threat. The number of doctors visits having to do with come kind of opioid addiction grew from 772,000 to a jaw-dropping 4.4 million.
But how could it have gotten so bad? The abuse of prescription painkillers has become so popular among people of all ages and teens, unfortunately, are included.
Help for Those Suffering From Addiction
When drug abuse is in the family it can often be hard to take the necessary steps to get your loved one help. However, you have to act to solve the problem before it’ too late.
If you are aware that a loved one is suffering from addiction, there are many detoxification facilities available to them. Detoxification is necessary to clear the body drugs and is usually accompanied by undesirable and sometimes fatal side effects. Unfortunately, detoxification by itself does not handle the entirety of addiction. There are still behavioral, social and psychological problems that must be addressed in order to produce a lasting recovery in an individual. Although the process of detoxification is usually handled with medications that are given by a doctor in an inpatient or outpatient facility, there are other services that offer a drug-free alternative such as the ones given at Narconon. They take a different approach to treating drug abuse by supporting and enhancing the body’s ability to heal and release drug toxins stored within the body.
Treatment begins by administering nutritional supplements to assist the body in activating its own natural ability to detoxify. Treatment continues with a specifically planned program, which includes nutritional supplements, daily exercise, time spent each day in a low-heat sauna, all closely supervised and reviewed. This program has been proven to show permanent results in overcoming addiction without the use of medications, which could potentially become depended upon by the recovering addict, and continue the cycle of addiction.
