Aside from its popularity and use caffeine is considered a drug that stimulates the nervous system by making you more alert, boosting energy and affecting your mood. It is not stored in the body but its effects can be felt for about six hours.

Per the report, some energy drinks have four to five times more caffeine than soda, even when the label states that there is only a certain amount in it, the combination of other types of ingredients in the drinks create a much higher potency.

As a result the substance has actually been discouraged in teens.

What Are Safe Levels Of Caffeine Use

Energy drinks are the fastest growing US beverage market, with one-third of teens and young adults regularly consuming energy drinks. Yet research is lacking on the risk of long-term use and effects on teens.

Safe levels of caffeine for adults is 100-200 mg per day. Pediatricians recommend that children and adolescents abstain from all stimulant containing energy drinks/caffeinated beverages. The consumption of caffeine is not going to greatly affect a teenager, but due to the fact that a teen is going through developments with their body, it is much wiser to stick to a healthy diet with plenty of sleep for proper development. Caffeine is not going to help with this as it has the properties of keeping someone awake and dehydrating the body, two qualities that go against healthy development.

Some of the side effects that caffeine can cause are:

Increased heart rate and palpitations
Insomnia
Jitters
Increased alertness, followed by loss of energy and stamina once is wears off.
Upset stomach

With regular and significant caffeine consumption, one cannot just stop consuming caffeine outright. It is advised that one takes it slow and starts by using less and less until at the level that one wants to be at, whether consuming a little bit or none at all.

Those abusing caffeine and especially teens should cut down their content of the substance and drink more healthy liquids and low sugar juices.
